There would be a lot to say about historic roots of the Jewish people and Zionism in Belarus.
Some famous artists as Mark Chagall, or famous actor’s grand parents (Kirk Douglas or Gwyneth Paltrow’s grand parents) or even famous Israelis’s politicians born there (Chaim Weizmann or Shimon Peres) have been the direct witnesses of the struggle of Jewish people in Belarus throughout the centuries…and in general some would say that from Harisson Ford, Kirk Douglas or Gwyneth Paltrow, none of them unfortunately never assist the Belarusian’s democracy transition by making a film about modern-day struggle for Belarusian freedom.
This is in a way what our association hope to achieve now by travelling with a small group of international participants throughout the ecological corridors in Belarus in August 2008.
In total, we will cycle and canoe through 1500 km of Belarusian eco-corridors spanning from the Polish to the Russian border. By cycling together with Belarusian participants and engaging in active contact with locals in remote villages we seek to express our solidarity in helping them maintain a healthy environment while working towards increasing the economic prosperity of a poor region.
The route will be divided in 3 equal periods allowing participants to sign up for one or more periods of 13 days.
We will meet Belarusian people and discuss on different subjects, especially nature protection and sustainable tourism.
Our objectives are :
- to share and exchange our different ways of life and environment with the Belarusian people from many villages along our way
- to promote and attend 3 village festivals which celebrate the unique culinary, craft and pagan traditions of the region.
- to evaluate the ecological and agrotourism potential of the expedition route
- to learn how and why it is important to reduce our impact on nature
- to get to know Belarus nature, wildlife and flora (Wolves, Brown bear, Lynx, Bever, Uhu, Raven, Eagles and Cranes etc)
- to realise how nature is being exploited there and how these resources are necessary for the country’s economy
- to appreciate cycling together
- and, of course, to enroll oneself in a human adventure, with people from many different countries.
