As my son approaches his 3rd birthday, and we prepare to cut his hair, we are also anticipating getting him to wear a yarmulka at that juncture as well. To make it easier for him to make that transition, we have started to slowly attempt to convince him to wear a yarmulka. While ocassionally he is interested and wants to put it on (for example, at a bat mitzvah this weekend, he loved the funky kippot they were giving out [suede with a metallic design] and decided that he wanted to wear one on the spot - a feeling that waned when we got home) on other ocassions he says - i don't like it, and throws it off his head as soon as we put it on.

I am curious if any of you out there had similar issues with your sons and what worked for you? Any advice or suggestions?

Thanks, and Shana Tova

Here's a few ideas:
* Make it a part of the upsherin hoopla. He's getting his own party, a hair cut and a kipah
* Have him pick his own kippa. leather kipas come with all kinds of characters (My son picked sponge bob, bob the builder and sports) as do sueade.
* Be like daddy- the whole "you are grown up" instills pride.
* Hats- Kipas fall off during play- my son wears lots of hats- it's easier and keeps the sun out of his eyes in the summer...

Ultimately they dont always want to wear it. Pick your fights, because realize it can be uncomfortable in the beginning.
