Seven Tips for a Safe Chanukah

Each year, Fire Departments are called to many homes for fires caused by candles. Below are some basic safety tips, not only for Chanukah, but for every Shabbos and Yom Tov. These tips are especially true for Oil menorahs which can be even more hazardous.

  • Never leave burning candles unattended. Do not go to sleep before all the candles or oil have stopped burning.
  • Never place burnings candle near something that can catch fire.
  • When placing menorahs on a windowsill make sure to keep them a safe distance from all window treatments. Also be sure they are sturdy and will not tip or fall.
  • Keep burning candles out of the reach of children or pets
  • Place all candle holders or menoras on a fireproof tray or foil.
  • Keep candles away from drafts and vents which may blow them over.
  • Trim wicks to 1/4″ before lighting

    By following these simple steps, people can safely continue to enjoy candles.
